A guideline to artist fees – Platform Beeldende Kunst Netherlands (PBK)

Posted on September 30, 2019May 5, 2020

Platform Beeldende Kunst (PBK) is “a strategic coalition that mobilises existing networks and maps out new connections in order to develop a foundation for joint action and spokesmanship”.

The core aims of this platform for visual arts is to both influence political decision making aligned to the desires of existing cultural groups, and to positively reposition the publics perceptions of arts and culture in the wider society.

Their guideline for artists’ fees, initiated in 2017, is a guide for both artists and institutes. Everyone working within visual art – as an artist, museum, art platform, art initiative, or festival – can make use of the calculator, the checklist and the standard contract that are part of the guideline

The guideline is a joint initiative from the visual art sector, in order to arrive at fair practice in the use of professional contracts between organisations and artists. Alongside PBK the initiators of the guideline are the Kunstenbond (artists’ union), Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars (Professional association of visual artists), and De Zaak Nu (lobby association for art platforms).

More than 100 museums and art institutes already apply the guideline in practice, with an increasing interest generated with government and cultural funding organisations.
